Rabbits and Small Mammal Care

Small animals such as rabbits, ferrets, and chinchillas need routine veterinary care, too! It’s important to schedule regular visits with our veterinarians at Locust Valley Veterinary Clinic to ensure that your pet stays in peak health. Our veterinarians recommend annual visits for small mammal. During this exam, your pet will receive:

  • Comprehensive physical exam
  • Thorough diet history and evaluation
  • Dental examination and dental care when needed
  • Diagnostic tests as needed

For New Pets

If you have recently acquired a rabbit, ferret, or other small mammal, we recommend that you bring your new pet in for an examination within one to two weeks after purchase. Be sure to feed your new pet the same food as you were given at the time of purchase, and we can discuss your pet’s nutritional needs during the first visit.

Emergencies

If your rabbit, ferret, or other small animal exhibits signs of illness or appears to be experiencing pain, it could indicate an emergency. Call us right away if your pet is exhibiting any of the following symptoms:

  • Changes in behavior
  • Decreased appetite
  • Diarrhea or persistent abnormal droppings
  • Absence of fecal material
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Distended abdomen
  • Abnormal breathing
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness

Call us today to set up your pet’s wellness exam, or if you have any questions regarding your small mammal.
